Having just returned from a week of rest and relaxation in Bora Bora, I’ve had a chance to look at pictures and reflect on what was one of the best trips I’ve taken in a long time.
I, myself, am more of a city traveler. I enjoy the hustle and bustle, the architecture, the people-watching. I love to just walk around a city for hours and experience everything that that place has to offer. My wife enjoys traveling to tropical locations soaking up the sun while relaxing on the beach. This was the perfect trip for her. And it ended up being the perfect trip for me, as I was able to get away from the everyday stresses of life and gain a further appreciation for this world we live in and how lucky we are to be able to travel to place like this.
It started out just like any international trip, with the unavoidable stress of the airport. From LAX, we took a 9 hour flight to Tahiti. From there, we took a small propeller plane to Bora Bora’s tiny airport. We were able to see the paradise from above and you could feel everyone’s excitement and awe. Once we landed, we transferred to a boat for a short ride that would take us to our resort which was on a different neighboring island. Luckily, I was traveling light with my duffel and JETCET body pack. Watching all the other couples struggle to check in, then collect their luggage, then drag around their 5-6 bags and get upset because of their overpacking confirmed that packing light (which I always try to do) was a good idea, especially for this trip.
When we finally arrived at our resort, the Conrad Bora Bora Nui Resort, the beauty and seclusion were immediately apparent. We took a golf cart to our villa, admiring the beauty that surrounded us. My wife and I were tired from our journey but we could not contain our excitement. We were wondering which villa we’d get, just hoping the next one would be ours and we could start to get comfortable. But we ended up at the last one. As we were shown into our home for the next week, we were told that our villa was the best villa on the resort, the favorite of all the workers. (I’m usually very suspicious of these kinds of claims.) They weren’t lying. It was the exact one we had seen online and was even more amazing in person than we had imagined.
As we finally started to get settled in, we walked out onto our deck and took a moment to take it all in. The feeling of joy and gratefulness hit me. This is something people dream of, I thought to myself. And it literally felt like a dream, like this can’t be real. I grabbed a beer, ordered room service, and took a dip in our own little infinity pool while looking down into the ocean and seeing fish right below and just admiring our view. From our room we could see the main island of Bora Bora. No other room could see our little back deck and boats didn’t come across. The seclusion was perfect. The room was perfect. The weather was perfect. It was all just so perfect.
During the day, the water was crystal-clear blue. You could easily see to the bottom and to the many reefs that were teeming with fish. The sounds of the ocean’s soft waves eased us into relaxation. The sun shone brightly with the morning sun rise reflecting off the ocean floor and into our room. The room itself had every amenity we would need and the resort had great restaurants, an amazing infinity pool, a quiet beach where we could kayak, paddle board, snorkel, swim, etc. We also had the opportunity to take a boat to the main Bora Bora island where we had lunch and did a little sight seeing and shopping.
Every afternoon, we would prepare ourselves to enjoy the beautiful sunsets. The colors in the sky were nothing like we’d ever seen before. We took the opportunity to experience each day's sunset from different places on the resort and every night was a little different but just as beautiful as the night before. One of the nights, we enjoyed a fantastic buffet dinner and dance performance.
Every evening, I’d look up at the stars in amazement. The sky was so clear you could see every star. It truly looked like every star was shining just a little bit brighter being in paradise. My favorite thing to do was sit by our waterside balcony in the evening, and either gaze up at the stars or stare down into the water and watch the marine life below. Every moment felt perfect and gave me an appreciation for where I was and where I could still one day go.
I'm not sure if any new destination will be able to measure up to breath-takingly beautiful Bora Bora. I must say, this was the most relaxing and most luxurious trip so far in my life. It was a time to get away from the everyday stresses and rejuvenate the mind and soul. And now that I am rejuvenated, and have a new appreciation for the beauty of this world, I am even more excited for our next trip.
